Philip Yu

Philip is a recent graduate from the University of Washington’s Civil Engineering Master’s program with a focus in structural engineering and mechanics (the only one of his immediate family that decided to not be a pharmacist!). He currently works as a structural engineer with the ports and coastal group at Mott MacDonald where he aids in the design of various marine structures such as piers, floats, and breakwaters.

Philip is currently serving as an At-Large chair and he was the volunteer coordinator of 2020 Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition. .

On getting involved...

"I joined my university's student chapter during one of their quarterly social events thinking it would be a great opportunity to meet with my fellow classmates in addition to learning more about the profession. I haven't been disappointed so far! Since then I've served in a variety of roles such as student chapter president, construction manager for Steel Bridge, and my most recent role in coordinating volunteers for our annual Popsicle Stick Bridge competition."

On civil engineering...

"Probably the most exciting part I find about civil engineering is the continuous process of innovation - new technologies, methods, designs, etc. Being apart of that process of pushing the envelope of what we can do or how we can do things better is always a fulfilling experience!"
