Bianca Casem

Bianca is a Project Engineer at Degenkolb Engineers, and has been working on projects all over Washington for the past eight years. As a structural engineer, Bianca has worked on new construction and remodels of residential, commercial, and office buildings. She is currently part of the Forensics and Reconstruction team where she is working on damaged buildings. It’s safe to say that Bianca’s favorite part of the job is spending time on site - from crawling in attics and crawl spaces to spending an entire day to record the extensive damage.

On something she wished she knew about civil engineering in college…

"I believe this is true for many professions, but more so in civil engineering where the profession covers such a wide variety of disciplines, is that it’s okay to feel unprepared coming into the industry. It’s okay to ask questions, no matter how many or how silly you might think it is. I’ve always considered my college education as 30% learning about civil engineering and 70% learning about how to solve problems. Civil engineering is collaborative and interdisciplinary in the real world and understanding all disciplines have made civil engineers versatile and great problem solvers."

On the benefits of joining ASCE…

"The best part of ASCE is the professional network. I have made life-long friends and some of my favorite memories are through ASCE, but it’s also helped me tremendously throughout my career. I have mentors and mentees through ASCE who I continuously learn from. "
