Member Highlight: Sarah Gillespie

Bio

Sarah grew up in Michigan and graduated from Purdue University in 2015 with a degree in Environmental and Ecological Engineering. She moved to Seattle 3 years ago and works as a Water Resources Engineer at WSP. She works on transportation drainage projects, water quality retrofit projects, and fish passage and stream restoration projects. When she is not headed out in the rain for a site visit or stomping through a stream in her waders, she likes to spend her time hiking and biking, reading a great novel or working on her next watercolor masterpiece.

Q&A

What motivated you to pursue your current career? Why did you become a Civil Engineer?

My Dad was an environmental scientist and always worked closely with engineers and other scientists on large, complex engineering projects. My sister and I grew up being able to spot a wastewater treatment plant from the car whenever we were on road trips! That background and a passion for helping the environment lead me to becoming a Water Resources Engineer.

What has been the greatest benefit of joining ASCE for you?

Meeting all the wonderful people who are involved in the Seattle Section YMF! And the opportunity to get high schoolers interested in engineering through the Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition. This is my third year being involved with PSB, hope to have a great event this year on March 1st at the Museum of Flight!

What is your favorite project you worked on and why?

I worked on a project at Naval Base Kitsap - Bangor that restored an impacted wetland into a pocket estuary along the Hood Canal. I really enjoyed this project because it was very unique and combined a lot of skills I had been learning over the past few years. Construction is almost complete, and I am excited to see how things go once it gets established!
