Bio
I work at GeoEngineers out of our Seattle office under the geotechnical discipline. My role involves project management and geotechnical design for development, transportation, and dams projects primarily in Washington state. I completed my BASc in geological engineering from UBC (in Canada) and my MS in geosystems engineering from UC Berkeley (Go Bears!). Prior to moving to Seattle earlier this year, I practiced in Vancouver BC for about five years. I have lived in Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Canada prior to this new adventure in the US. My interests include travel, photography, cars, cooking, and association football.
Q&A
What’s one thing about the civil engineering profession you wished you knew in college?
It was not until I started working that I truly appreciated the variety of career paths available to civil engineers and the versatility of the field. Civil engineers can go into design, construction, operations, government, sales etc. I feel that many more college students would pursue civil engineering if they knew about the opportunities available to us!
What has been the greatest benefit of joining ASCE for you?
As a newcomer to civil engineering in the US, becoming an active ASCE member has been key in developing my network both locally and nationally. I have found my fellow ASCE volunteers to be very interesting, supportive, and energetic.
What is your favorite project you worked on and why?
One of my favorite projects was the Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4 project. This was a challenging design-build project near Golden BC Canada where 4.8 km of the Trans-Canada Highway needed to be widened to four lanes. This was particularly interesting from a geotechnical perspective as we dealt with steep unstable slopes, rockfall/avalanche hazards, and unpredictable geology. Our project team used a series of bridges, viaducts, MSE walls, and cuts to execute this exciting project. I personally learned a lot throughout the project working with some very competent engineers and contractors.
